Work.

Work as action.  Work as concept.  Work as identity.  Those three elements have been swimming around my head for some now, so I thought I'd put them on "paper".  My performance uniform is inspired by industrial workers (safety goggles, coveralls, gloves) and I am intrigued by the place 'work' holds in the American Psyche.  On the one hand 'a good days work'/'hard work' is this concept to be praised, but leisure and luxury are throughly in the imaginative space, to be experienced mostly in retirement.   This seems a contradiction to productivity.  As an artist, I'm coming to terms with fallow periods as an opportunity to rest and contemplate other possibilites.  It feels unfortunate that the average American worker doesn't experience this...
On a related note, I've been investigating visual representation of work by the WPA (Works Progress Administration).  Please enjoy a slideshow of some images below.
