Body Scanning + Garment Handling Systems (Project #497)


I am attempting to be more strategic with the development of Project #497 (or John Henry and the Patchwork Penitentiary).  My approach has been to think of funding in terms of the entire installation, but I think it might be better to break it down to the components that I will need to create the work.  For example, I want to capture 3-D scans of black men (and women) to be manipulated in CAD and later used as a basis for body form patterns.  I found a firm near Raleigh, NC that will allow access for 10 hours (8-6pm) at a rate of $600.  Writing a grant request for that specific amount feels more realistic than the overarching figure that is the grand production total.  I also communicated with Bill at RAILEX, a garment handling systems manufacturer based out of Long Island City, and he's already suggested some cost effective options that I might want to consider as a placeholder for my WorkSpace Open Studio presentation in April 2010.  I am sharing some of my visual inspiration with him so that he can better advise me.  Check below for a slide show sampling...
