As a faithful reader of TheYBF.com (The Young, Black, and Fabulous) I was thrilled to see an extended clip of the Tyra Banks Show featuring Chris Rock + Raven Symone discussing GOOD HAIR. I have plans to see the film and I'm looking forward to extending the conversation as a part of my HAIRPOLITIC series. Mr. Rock showed tremendous insight throughout the show, but I was most intrigued by his response to Tyra's question regarding any revelations he gleaned from the making of the film. Check it...
"Women really wanna be beautiful. More than anything else. They wanna look good more than they wanna feel good."
- Chris Rock
As I move forward with The Platinum Eaters|white bitches project, this sentiment becomes a crucial element of discovery. As a woman I continue to balance my need to be accepted and appreciated according to my personality and intellect, with the raw desire to be seen as, well, desirable. Often these pursuits seem to be at odds with each other- when I am making the most progress as a philosopher|student|artist, it is my physical appearance that suffers. Conversely, when the 'swag is on a hundred trillion', my accelerated social life usurps the alone time necessary to complete/initiate my work.
Ultimately though, I hope that I will prioritize feeling good above looking good- what are your thoughts?
